Offset, screen, and hot stamping each carry setup costs, cylinder or screen counts, and color-change downtime. A ten-SKU launch that looks economical on paper can become expensive if every variant needs unique screens and narrow registration windows.
Offset suits fine type, gradients, and tight trapping for photographic looks. It demands disciplined prepress: tube substrates are not flat paper, and distortion compensation differs by diameter and wall thickness.
Opaque whites and heavy spot colors often lean on screen printing. Hot stamping adds metallic pop but needs clear tolerance bands for skew under high-speed application. Mixed decoration is common; each added pass is another adhesion test after flexing.
Consolidate spot colors across SKUs, share cylinders where artwork allows, and sequence launches so you amortize tooling. Ask your printer for a matrix: cost per thousand vs. number of colors vs. lead time—then pick the lane that matches your cash flow, not only your creative deck.
Decoration is half engineering and half production planning. Match the process to the art, then lock acceptance standards for registration, rub, and gloss before you approve the first production lot.
