Aluminum barrier laminate (ABL) sandwiches a thin foil between plastic layers for fragrance and moisture protection. Plastic barrier laminate (PBL) replaces metal with polymer barriers suited to different recycle narratives and sensory goals. Both can look similar on a render; they diverge under stress and in end-of-life messaging.
Repeated squeezing can reveal microcracking or whitening at creases—behaviors that differ by laminate grade and adhesive system. ABL often feels slightly stiffer; PBL can feel softer but may trade barrier for specific oils. Always test with your exact fill, not a generic lotion placebo.
Foil thickness and local sorting rules determine whether ABL is welcomed in a given stream. PBL may align better with some plastic-only channels but still faces scrutiny if multiple polymers are present. Prepare answers for retailer questionnaires rather than improvising from a brochure.
If fragrance retention and tight barrier drive shelf life, ABL often leads. If you need a plastic-first story and your formula is less aggressive, PBL may fit. Let migration and weight-loss data split close calls.
